Romance Writers Weekly ~ Tell Me About Your First…
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. Texas has been colder than I’d like, but we are all happy and healthy so no complaining. LOL
Did you hop over from Marc Stevens‘s sexy blog? If not, you better hop on back and give him a read.
I’m so thrilled to be back hopping with RWW. This week Brenda Margriet wants to talk about “Firsts.” First memories, first romance novel you fell in love with, first book you read, first kiss, etc. Of course, I don’t want to talk about any of those. I want to tell you about the first book I ever wrote from beginning to end.
The title was Distant Thunder and it will never see the light of day. Not that it wasn’t a good story. It was! It was great! Sadly, I lacked the skill to make it reader ready. I think I was twenty-three and had just discovered my love for writing stories down. I had always had them in my head. I spent hours staring out windows plotting when I should have been learning something about math or science.
Dinstant Thunder was about high school friends who worked on a horse farm together. Separated when the hero joins the service, they don’t see each other for years and then only to attend the funeral of the man who owned the farm. The farmers widow convinces them to make a journey from New Jersey to Colorado towing three horses. During the trip their love is rekindled.
Once in Colorado a terrible event (heroine is raped by the widow’s son) sends her running.
There was a happily ever after, but only after a lot of heartbreak. By the time my writing improved enough to fix the book, my genre preference had changed to historical and paranormal. Still, I love that little book and always will have a special place in my heart for “my first.”
Keep on reading by hopping over to Kathryn Renard’s blog and find out her FIRST.

Only one lady can save London. Only one man can save her from herself.
When demons threaten London, Lady Belinda answers the call.
Lord Gabriel Thurston returns home from war to find his fiancée is not the sweet young girl he left behind. She’s grown into a mysterious woman who guards her dark secrets well. When he sees her sneaking away from a ball, he’s convinced it’s for a lover’s rendezvous. Following her to London’s slums, Gabriel watches in horror as his fiancée ruthlessly slays a man.
Lady Belinda Carlisle’s only concern was her dress for the next ball—until demons nearly killed her and changed everything. A lady by day, and a demon hunter by night, she knows where her duty lies. Ending her betrothal is the best way to protect Gabriel from death by a demon’s hand.
Gabriel soon realizes, like him, Belinda has been fighting for her country. He joins in the fight, determined to show her that their love can endure, stronger than ever.
Wonderful post. I think we all have those early writings hidden away from the world,it’s part of the process, but your first story sounds great.
Thanks, Mark. I have a few hidden away. I consider them my learning process. 🙂
Your first story sounds really good. Writing and especially editing has been a huge learning process, but a great first.
Aww, I have one of those too. =) I don’t know if I’ll put it up for public consumption. Maybe on Wattpad or something.
Yup, I have one of those wretched first novels hidden away as well. Love the story, hate the writing. Someday, maybe…
ooooh those firstborns. I have one myself and the same same… I moved to a new genre and I just keep it close to my heart, like my calorie-counter and truss.
🙂
Your first manuscript sounds like a great story! Maybe you’ll resurrect it some day. I love me a cowboy! 🙂
