Romance Writers Weekly ~ What’s in a Name
This week’s topic came from me, A.S. Fenichel. I asked the group, how do you choose your character’s names? Do you have a system, a book, an app or is it random?
I have a couple of methods for character naming. Usually, for my main characters, I try to find a name that not only sounds right, but also has the appropriate meaning. I have a baby naming book and I use baby naming websites for this. The baby naming sites are also great for characters who are from cultures whose names I’m less familar with. I recently had a book with an Egyptian character, and I did a lot of research to find him the perfect name, Geb Arafa. Geb was from a Mythical earth god. Hopefully, that will work out for him. 🙂
Then there are times when I have randomly named secondary charaters and then those characters begged for their own books. When that happens you just have to roll with the name you chose and hope it wasn’t something terrible. LOL
