Romance Writers Weekly ~ What’s in A Name?
Welcome! This week I asked my fellow authors – How do you choose your character’s names? Do you have a system, a book, an app or is it random?
I personally usually start with a name that has some meaning. Like in the book I’m writing now the heroin’s name is Esme. Esme means esteemed. It worked for the character and the story because Esme is a truly good person, and her name needed to reflect that. The Hero’s name is William. I liked this because he’s a reluctant war hero, and I just loved the sound of Sir William. Knighted for his heroism. Sigh…
I do have a name book, and I also used the internet to find names that work with the storyline. Sometimes, I just like a name, and I have to use it. Don’t you think certain names conjure up the kind of person they belong to? I know that there are certain names that I’ve never like a person with that name or on the other side, I never met a person named Stephanie who I didn’t adore.
Do you have names in your life who you always love their owners? Or maybe just the opposite? Tell me about them.
