Romance Writers Weekly ~The First Thing
This week we’re beating the heat with a fun question – Describe your earliest memory.
You know, I have a lot of little snapshots from bouncing on my dad’s foot in the den to my mom dunking me under the water in the pool when she taught me to swim and hold my breath. I have a terrifying glimpse of my first day of nursery school. I remember lines of desks and being without my mom for the first time. It was not pleasant. I remember other kids laughing while spending the day on the verge of tears.
I have little bits of my imaginary friend, Richie, and our family cats.
My first real memory is from the day my grandfather (Poppy) died. I must have been three or four because I wasn’t in school yet. I was in the office downstairs with my mom. We lived in a split-level home on Long Island. I can’t remember what we were doing in the office, but my dad came home in the middle of the day.
Mom and I went to the steps that led up to the main level. Mom smiled at him, “What are you doing home?”
He didn’t say anything, just looked at her with the saddest expression.
Mom burst into tears.
I had no idea what was happening and asked, “Why is Mommy crying?”
My father said, “Poppy died.”
They went over and sat on the couch in the den. She cried and cried.
I remember it so clearly, and I remember not understanding what it meant.
In the days to come, my grandmother and other relatives would come to the house. My sister was devastated. And still, I didn’t really understand.
When I was older, I learned Poppy had been scheduled for surgery that morning. When they opened him, he was so riddled with cancer, that they just closed him back up. He never woke up from that surgery.
I hope your early memories are brighter. Tell me about them?
