Romance Writers Weekly ~ Oh, That Smell…
Welcome back. I was away at a conference and the last two weeks have been crazy with book releases and preparation. I’m thrilled to be back in the saddle.
We have a great question today: Tell us about your favorite scent and what it evokes for you.
When my husband and I went on our honeymoon in Italy, we drove from Florence to the small mountain village where his family is from. We had a lovely day meeting the mayor and some people who knew his family. We saw the home where his grandmother grew up and got copies of his grandparents’ birth certificates and marriage license.
Because we has such a lovely day and because everything moves a bit slower in Italy, we were late leaving the village and therefore late for our reservation in Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. It was nearly eleven at night when we arrived in the region.
Our GPS kept telling us to drive down this dark gated alley. We were skeptical, but after driving past it three times, we finally relented and drove to the gate. We pushed the button on the speaker box and when someone answered in Italian, we told them who we were.
The gate opened slowly and revealed a dark walled drive with trees blocking the sky. With the window open, we caught the scent of something wonderful, but we had no idea what it was. Light and floral, we longed to know.
After a tentative introduction to a giant of a night watchman who carried our bags, even though we tried to protest. Then he brought us wine, cheese, meat, and fruit. We ate and passed out from exhaustion.
In the morning we opened the windows of our honeymoon suit to find ourselves in a beautiful lemon grove overlooking the sea. Being from New Jersey, we had never smelled lemon flowers before. It was spectacular and that scent always brings me back to that night and our adventures in Italy. xoxo
