Romance Writers Weekly ~ How Real is It?
Compare the relationship with the characters in your book with real life relationships. How do they differ and how are they the same? |
Hmm… I guess I should preface this by saying; a part of me is in every character I create. Sometimes the characters are like my husband, mother, father, siblings, or friends. But most time, every character highlights some characteristic of me either good or bad.
Often this means that the journey to a Happily Ever After may take the path that feels realistic. Often it is based on what I would do if faced with the same situation. Sometimes it’s what I think my husband would do if he were faced with an event or circumstance.
In contrast, I RARELY let my characters do anything that I find unforgivable. I know everyone has a different tolerance level. I’m not judging anyone. I’m only saying that if I can’t forgive them, I’ll have a hard time finishing the book with a HEA. I know that in reality, lots of people are forgiven for what I might deem “unforgivable.” Everyone lives their own life with their own code. My books, my code. LOL
It’s probably not fair to have that limitation, but that’s life. I have to love the Hero/Heroine as much as they love each other, or the reader will know. I believe that with to my very soul.
