I’m always amazed by these children’s stories that do not have a good lesson or teach some important value. That is the case with The Tinder Box. This story comes from Denmark. It’s about a soldier on his way home from war. He meets a witch who gives him all the gold, silver and copper he could ever want in exchange for bring her a tinder box. I love this one! You may know this story as The Princess and the Pea. If you love musicals, maybe you’ve seen Once Upon a Mattress. So this week is a little different. Today’s page in my fairy tale book is not really a fairy tale. It’s the story of Dick Whittington and his cat. Now I don’t know about the cat, but Dick was a real person. Sir Richard Whittington lived from 1354 to 1423 and served as the Lord Mayor of London three times. He was knighted by Henry V. Do you know this one? It’s about another miller. I wonder why so many of these stories start with a miller. Anyway, this miller has three sons and when he dies he only has 3 possessions to leave them. The eldest son gets the mill the second an ass and the youngest a cat. . What’s your favorite version of Sleeping Beauty. I used to think mine was the original Disney version. A bit scary but really good story. Then recently I saw Maleficent! FABULOUS!
