Romance Writers Weekly ~ Where in the World or Not the World
Why choose one location over the next? That’s What Carrie Elks want to know. So some times a book idea starts with a location.
When I wrote Mayan Afterglow I had a dream about a castle. There are some beautiful houses in New York State that would pass as modern day castles. I’m familiar with the area, so I went with it. The book is about a ancient Mesoamerican demon taking over the world so of course it had to wind up in Mexico. For the third book, Mayan Inferno, I had just been to a resort in Southwest Texas and driven through Big Bend National Park where I saw the standing stones. It was the perfect set up for the end of the world. 😉
Sometimes it’s just about the time period I write in. The Demon Hunter books are Regency books. London was a sensible place to begin. I’ve been to London many times, so it made it easier, but the books still required a lot of setting research. When I needed a home for the Company to occupy, I took it to another place I had visited, Edinburgh. When I was there I found the city kind of spooky and imagined it filled with ghosts. It was the perfect place to give Lillian her story.
So there you have it. I write about places I’ve been that interest me. I love to travel and poke around in someone else’s culture for a while. Maybe there’s a faery ring hiding under their greenwood
Keep going and find out how Dani Jace picks her settings. See you next week!
I love London! I’ve only been once, but wish I could go back soon.
Great post! I like to write about places that interest me too! London is one of my favourites.
