Welcome back! This week, Leslie Hachtel wants to know, If you’re published, how is the business different than what you expected? If you’re planning to publish, what are your expectations?

Good question! Before I was published, I had higher expectations. While I didn’t think I’d be an overnight success, I did think I would be making a living within the first few years. Not true. I’m sure some people have immediate success, but not me. I’ve struggled more than I expected on the financial end of the business.

On the bright side, I also thought I would struggle to continue to come up with books to write. I thought surely, I will have a finite number of stories to tell. Not true. It seems ever time I think I’m tapped out, the flood gates open and more characters poke me in the ribs demanding their story be told.

I still enjoy writing books. If I didn’t, I would have given up a long time ago. Writing is harder than I thought it would be. Some days, the story is so hard to tell, it makes me cry and I have to walk away for a while. Other days are filled with joy and I wish the day was longer so I could keep going. I’m very lucky to be able to do what I love and wait on the day when I can pay bills doing it.
