FairyTale Friday ~ The Real Princess
I love this one! You may know this story as The Princess and the Pea. If you love musicals, maybe you’ve seen Once Upon a Mattress. If you’re my age or older you probably remember Carol Burnett playing Princess Fred. Makes me laugh just thinking about it.
Here we go:
Once Upon a Time…there was a prince who desperately wanted to marry a REAL princess. He search high and low but always found flaws in the this princess or that. There was always something which was not quite right about each one. After scouring the countryside, he returned home very sad because he wanted a real princess so badly.
One night there was a terrible storm and the thunder and lightening drove a princess to the castle door. She was wet and in a terrible state from the storm. They gave her a place to sleep for the night with a stack of twenty mattresses upon the bedstead and under the lowest mattress the queen place a single pea. As any REAL princess would feel the tiny bump, they waited until the next day to learn how the princess had slept.
When she awoke and was asked how she had enjoyed her rest, she said, “Oh terribly badly! I have hardly closed my eyes the whole night. Heaven knows what was in the bed. I seemed to be lying upon some hard thing, and my whole body is black and blue this morning.”
They knew immediately that she was a REAL princess because she had felt the tiny pea through twenty mattresses, and so the prince took her for his wife. the Pea was put into the museum, where it may still be seen if no one has stolen it.
Now this is a true story.

I’m not so sure about that last part, but it’s a funny story and if you have the opportunity to see Carol’s version of Once Upon a Mattress you will laugh your head off.
There’s a 1972 version with Tracy Ullman that’s wonderful too.
Happy FairyTale Friday and have a wonderful weekend. 🙂
