Fairy Tale Friday ~ Puss in Boots
Do you know this one? It’s about another miller. I wonder why so many of these stories start with a miller. Anyway, this miller has three sons and when he dies he only has 3 possessions to leave them. The eldest son gets the mill the second an ass and the youngest a cat.
Seems a bit unfair at the time, but the cat (who speaks and no one is surprised by this) convinces the youngest son not to eat him, to buy him a pair of fine boots and promises he will make it worth it in the end.
So, Monsieur Puss goes about trapping a rabbit and he brings it to the king. He claims it is a gift from his master, the Marquis of Carabas. This title is completely made up by the cat. A few days later he brings the king partridges from his master.
He does this for some time and then one day when the King and his daughter are due to travel the area, Monsieur Puss convinces his master (the youngest son) to bathe in the river. He then hides his master’s clothes. As the Kings carriage passes, he screams that his master, the Marquis of Carabas is drowning.
Upon hearing this, the king stops the carriage and has his men “save” the “marquis” who goes along with the farce adding that some criminals had stolen his clothes. The king dresses him in his own best suit and as soon as the princess sees him, she falls in love.
Oh, but that’s not all…
The clever cat convinces workers along the way to say that lands belong to Carabas. Then he tricks a shape-shifting Ogre into turning himself into a mouse that Monsieur Puss eats, leaving the Ogre’s castle to be claimed by the Marquis of Carabas. As soon as the king and his daughter see the fine castle and lands, a wedding is arranged that very day.
Lesson? Get yourself a cat! LOL
I must have Molly fitted for some boots. 😛
