Romance Writers Weekly ~ Why Romance?
Welcome back to the RWW blog hop! This week Leslie Hachtel asked, What genre do you love to write the most and why?
I’ve tried many genres. Before I was published I wrote a contemporary romance, two epic fantasies, a science fiction and a time travel. The common theme was a central romance that ended in a happily ever after.
Why? I think my love for Cinderella might have something to do with it. As a little girl the original cartoon version of Walt Disney’s Cinderella came out in the theaters. I sang and danced and dreamed that movie for months.
There’s something so alluring about knowing it will all turn out well, but not seeing how it can possibly happen. I love a good Happily Ever After and I love writing romance.
After my first book was published (a distopian paranormal romance) I wrote a few more in that sub-genre. I tried a contemporary, paranormal, and a couple of historical. I really loved writing paranormal historical. Unfortunately, not many peopled wanted to read that mix.
I settled on Historical Romance set in the early 19th century England because it’s what I most enjoy reading and I think my voice suites the genre. I realize I’m a bit more direct both in my writing and in reality than most historical romance writers, I believe the genre can do with some shaking up. My heroines do not simper or faint. Well, they might faint but there had better be a damned good reason for it.
I write female characters who are empowered to make choices in a time when that was a challenge for women. I create circumstaces where they might decide NOT to marry and therefore the hero has a challenge on his hands.
