Romance Writers Weekly ~ Valentine once upon a time…
Once upon a time (9 years ago) in a land far, far away (New York City) there was ALMOST the most spectacular Valentine’s Day.
You see, there was this couple who had been dating for almost five years. The hero (Let’s call him Dave) was about to retire from thirty years of police work, while our heroine (Andrea) was still working hard in the New York fashion industry. They were very much in love and had even taken the huge step of living together.
Our couple had dreams as well. Dave wanted to move south to a place where he could fish year-round. He had the place all picked out and had even managed to talk Andrea into going in on buying a nice place in Texas. Andrea dreamed of writing romance novels full time. She was already writing them, but having a full-time job and an hour and a half commute to work left little time for getting published.
With the promise of time to write, Dave talked Andrea into maybe moving to Texas and away from her friends, family and a good job.
He just needed to do one little thing.
He planned it all out. On Valentine’s Day he would come to the city armed with yellow roses (Andrea’s favorite) and a diamond ring. He made arrangements with some of her friends at work to get him in and help him get Andrea out of the room.
Andrea knew nothing of the plan.
And when she took the train home that Valentine’s night she still knew nothing of the plan. She arrived home to a lovely card and a bouquet of mixed flowers. They went out to dinner and Dave told her all about a serial robber who had come to justice that day. Dave and his police department had been involved in a chase through multiple cities that ended in a standoff in a house.
Since Andrea didn’t know anything about what she had missed, she enjoyed the telling of the exciting day and was happy to have Dave home safe for dinner out. Most of those arrests end with a lonely night at home with no Valentine’s dinner and a bunch of worry.
On February 15th Andrea is called in to a meeting after lunch. Fashion people run on their own clock so when the parties meant to call into the meeting didn’t, it was not really that unusual. Laughing about the missed meeting, Andrea returned to her desk where a dozen yellow roses and the most stunning ring waited for her. Also, a note:
Marry me and make me deliriously happy for the rest of my life.
She searched the room for Dave and finally found him waiting for her response.
They were married two weeks later, on February 29th in a small ceremony at home. Sixteen months later they moved to Texas to pursue their dreams.
And they all lived happily ever after.
