Romance Writers Weekly ~ Love it, Hate it
Welcome, Hoppers! I hope your 2017 is going well so far. I’m trying to get my eating under control, be more consistent with exercise and balance work and play. Easy peasy, right!?
.
Talking about balance, Leslie Hachtel asked us to answer these opposing questions. What do you love best about your writing? Like the least? And what are you doing to fix the things you don’t like?
.
You can find out how Leslie answer the questions HERE!
.
Here we go:
What do I love about my writing??? I’m a good, straight forward story teller. I get to the point and I keep the story moving.
.
What do I like least??? I’m a terrible speller, I sometimes forget to set the scene in my rush to get the story out and I’m the homonym queen.
.
There I said it.
.
I remember in grade school, every teacher I ever had was going to be the one to teach me to spell. Sadly, hard as those wonderful men and women tried, they all failed. I cannot spell. Without the digital age, it is not likely any of my stories would have seen the light of day. Luckily, we live in a day that the spelling can be overcome by technology.
.
Okay, so the thing with Homonyms is awful. I don’t know why I do it. When I find them, I’m like…DUH! But when my fingers are flying across the keys fowl and foul, hair and hare and sometimes even crowed and crowd can be misplaced. It give my editor a chuckled when I write fowl play. She writes me notes like, “is there a bird in this scene?” Then I get a laugh too. Still, it’s embarrassing.
.
Setting the scene, I like to jump right in to dialogue or action. My editor will write, “where are we?”
.
However, most of the time, I find these during my own editing process. Most writers are long winded and have to cut back on description and pros. I always have to add them in. A few words about the room or the scenery in Hyde Park.
.
None of your favorite writers are perfect. Without a good editor we would fail more often than succeed. My goal is for every book to be better than the last. When I’m an 87 year old woman, tapping away at my computer keys, I hope I still have something to learn and something to bring my lovely readers.

Mmmm dialogue & action. Yes please. LOL. And yet you’re so freaking good at description and mise-en-scene. Who knew?
