Romance Writers Weekly ~ Flash Fiction ~ Valentine’s Day

After thirty minutes waiting in the restaurant, Fiona’s phone buzzed. She opened her text, heart sinking with the knowledge dinner was cancelled.
I have a situation.
Can’t leave station. Sorry. |
With a sigh, she pulled out her wallet, paid for wine and a tip and left the table she had reserved a month advance. The sound of her own heels clicking on the wood floors and then the pavement filled her ears. There was no sense in replying. He was busy and wouldn’t get to it until later anyway.
The valet brought her car and she drove home. As soon as she closed her front door behind her, she kicked off the bright red stilettos and padded to the kitchen for leftover fried chicken and a glass of wine. Her stomach knotted, unable to completely suppress the worry that came with being the wife of a cop.
It was one in the morning when Fiona gave up and went to bed.
His warm body, fresh from the shower, slid in behind her.
Being next to him was like coming home. Moaning, she snuggled back. “You okay?”
Shamus kissed her shoulder. “Yeah, baby. I’m sorry about dinner.”
She shrugged. “What was it?”
Strong arms pulled her in tight. “Missing child, a ten year old girl.”
These always made Fiona’s gut twist. Afraid to know the answer, she couldn’t help asking. “Did you find her?”
“Yeah, home safe and sound now.” Pride and relief filtered through his calm exterior.
“Thank God.”
“I’m really sorry. I know you were looking forward to dinner and I’ll bet you looked stunning. I was ready to walk out the door when the call came in. Jacobs was stuck in traffic and Bossier was out and already had a drink since he had the night off. I had no choice but to stay.”
Years ago, she’d learned that no plans were set in stone. “You don’t have to apologize to me. You found the child, that’s all that matters.”
He hugged her and kissed her back. “You matter, Fi.”

Daylight streamed through the window. Rolling over, she found the space beside her empty. Saturday meant she had an extra few minutes of sleep before two little monsters jumped into bed with her. She snuggled back in. It was nice of Shamus to give her a break and get the kids breakfast.
The bed dipped. Fiona opened her eyes and peaked from under the down comforter. Nine o’clock, holy crap. She threw the covers back and sat up. “What’s going on?”
Shamus sat at the end of the bed smiling. Shirtless, his muscles almost enough to distract her from the missing chaos.
“Where are the kids?”
“I called your mom and she agreed to keep them until tomorrow.” His brown eyes sparkled with mischief.
His smile had exactly the same effect on her that it had ten years earlier when he proposed on their third date. In spite of being groggy from sleep and confused by not knowing exactly what was going on, she yearned to touch him, kiss him and so much more. “The whole day?”
He crawled up the bed, leaned on the pillows and pulled her into his arms. “I want you to myself for one entire day, Fi. Is that okay?”
Her heart sped up and she trembled with desire. “What do you intend to do with me for an entire day?”
“First, I’m going to feed you, then I’m going to ravage you. If that all works out, I thought I would leave it up to you to decide what to do with the afternoon and evening.” His lips grazed the spot behind her ear that sent a pool of need between her legs.
“You should ravage me first.”
Chuckling, he hugged her. “Why first?”
“Because that phone is going to ring any moment and pull you away and I can always feed myself. The ravaging is better with you here.”
“I am off duty and unavailable. I convinced Jamison to cover and Miles is the back-up. No one will call because I have threatened to beat them within an inch of their lives if they bother my one day with my beautiful, patient wife.”
Fiona’s throat clogged up. “I’m not patient.”
He pulled her around to face him. “While most spouses would have raged over a missed date, you ate cold chicken with no drama. You probably waited up half the night for me before you went to bed. I know you, Fi. You are the best.”
It was nice to know he appreciated her even if she didn’t think she’d done anything special. Being a cop’s wife had its drawbacks, but it was the life she chose and she loved Shamus more every day. “Does that mean I can have the ravaging first?”
She ran her hands up his back then down again pressing her hips forward.
His shaft pressed against her middle. He groaned and ground against her. Muscled straining, he pressed his lips to hers for a taste before devouring her mouth.
Want flooded her as she opened her mouth against his and slid her hand between them to heighten his pleasure.
“You don’t play fair, beautiful.”
